About...

Once again the Escaño site appears in a new shape. This is the 4th rebuild since it first entered the electronic world. A lot of questions arrive from the visitors, and some are just made up to explain what this site is all about, how it works, and how you can be a part of it.

www.escano.com
  • What is www.escano.com?
It is a network for keeping relatives in touch with the rest of the family. It is also a documentation of the family, and an information center of activities that the family is involved with.

A relative is somehow related to Fernando Escaño. That's the reason for the name of this site.

  • Who owns it?
Jonas Sala owns both the web site and the domain name since 1997.

  • When did it all start? During the 3rd reunion in December 1995, my first reunion, I met a lot of relatives I had only heard about before. I also discovered that many of them had email.

With a book from 1989 as the only documentation of relatives, I asked how about a web page which would be easier to update? The reaction was positive, so in January 1996 the first page came to life.

In 1997 I decided we needed our own domain. 6 months later the web site opened and remained more or less the same for 2 years. A 3rd rebuild was done during the summer 2000, but it turned out to be temporary when I discovered better techniques to implement the site with.

  • How did you build it? The site uses PHP and mySQL. At last count, it was made up of 35 public documents and 30 administration documents, summing up to more then 10,000 lines of code. Everything written in a texteditor...

  • Where does the flag come from? The flag, here a symbol for the Escaño site, resembles the flag used by Escaño lines. It was drawn by Mirja Wande, an Art Director I worked with in 1996.

People pages
  • Who are the people listed here?
They are relatives, i.e. somehow related to Fernando Escaño. Being married to a descendant also counts.

  • How do I correct the information?
When you see information that you know is incorrect for a person, press the Change information link at the bottom of the page. Correct the information along with your own name and email, and the administrators will review the changes as soon as they get an opportunity.

  • Why can't I add people myself?
To not complicate things too much, only an administrator can add new people. So if there is someone you miss, please use the feedback and write the name and parents of the one missing. Once the person have been added, you can come back and fill in the rest of the blanks.

  • Why can't I correct information about a marriage?
Since marriages aren't explicitly shown, i.e. have their own listing, I prefer the administrators handle this. If you have lots of info, why don't you send me a note and ask to become an administrator?

  • Why doesn't the email addresses show?
To avoid abuse of the information shown here, email adresses are not disclosed if I can help it. However, if an adress is present you should always be able to send a message through this site.

  • What is a "Line"?
The children of Fernando Escaño each form a line. Any descendant of Fernando's children belong to that child's line. Being married to a descendant also makes you a part of the line.

The generations start with Don Fernando as the first generation. However he does not belong to any line.

  • The line information is not correct. Why?
What line a person belongs to depends on the person's parents and who the person is married to. If this information is incorrect, the line information may also be incorrect.

On each person, there is information on what line the person belongs to. This information is not updated automatically. This means that sometimes the line information will be missing until a manual update of the database is performed.

  • How do I look for someone I know?
If you only know part of the name, use the simple search. To limit the number of hits, with a bit more information you can use the advanced search.

  • Who reviews the changes of the information?
The administrators are responsible for reviewing changes submitted. They may approve all or some of the fields in a change request, or they may reject the change in full. If you filled in your email address and clicked the confirmation box, you will receive an email once the change has been reviewed.

  • What is advanced search?
When the simple search gives too many hits, the advanced search makes it easier to locate the one you are looking for. You can limit the search to a certain line, only look for those with photos, etc.
